Most people know that light is important to photography. But, they might not truly understand why.

When it comes to photography, there’s nothing more important than light.

I think this comparison shows why, and let’s face it, it’s much more fun to see a visual than to read a bunch of technical jargon. In this example, the image on the left shows a typical shot, with a camera-mounted flash. This would be similar to the shot that most people would get, regardless of whether you have a point and shoot camera or an SLR. But, notice the bright reflection on the front of every bottle? Well, it’s a little distracting, isn’t it? It doesn’t do anything to enhance the final image. The camera had enough light to make the image, and the image is fine. But, it’s nothing special.

But, look at the image on the right. Just adding a little backlight really changes the final look of the image, doesn’t it?

By the way, can you believe this is a CAKE? Yes, seriously. It’s was the groom’s cake at the wedding I shot last night. Isn’t it awesome? I wish I had found out who made it, because it was really cool!
